Lowriding is more than just a car culture—it’s a deeply rooted expression of identity, resilience, and artistry within Black and Brown communities, especially in the Southwest and West Coast. The lowrider movement emerged in the 1940s and ’50s, primarily in Mexican American barrios, as a way to customize and showcase classic cars with hydraulic suspensions, candy paint, and intricate murals that often told personal and cultural stories. By the ’60s and ’70s, lowriding also became significant in Black communities, blending with the rise of funk, soul, and hip-hop.
